Zero Waste Project

CICESE is a Mexican institution dedicated to scientific research and higher education. Located in Ensenada, Baja California, its mission is to generate scientific and technological knowledge, as well as to train highly skilled human resources. CICESE has various research departments in fields such as biology, oceanography, applied physics, electronics, computer science, and more, and collaborates with different institutions and companies to promote science and technology both in Mexico and internationally.

In November 2022, a diagnosis revealed that, with 70% of the community in attendance, CICESE generated 700 kg of waste in just one week. This analysis highlighted the scale of the problem, laying the groundwork for the development of a strategic plan aimed at gradually reducing waste generation at the institution.

What is Zero Waste?

The Zero Waste Project is an initiative aimed at reducing waste generation and promoting proper waste management through reuse, recycling, and waste reduction. Its goal is to minimize the environmental impact of institutions and communities, contributing to a more sustainable environment.

One of the main challenges of this project is the active participation of staff and students, as their commitment is essential to the success of the plan. To address this, continuous training will be conducted, and awareness strategies will be implemented to encourage the community to follow the actions outlined in the plan. The support of Ensenada Verde, the Pelícano Program, and the Communication Department will be crucial in this phase of education and motivation.
