Revolutionizing Composting: Implementation of the Black Soldier Fly to Transform Organic Waste

As part of the Zero Waste program and our commitment to sustainability and organic waste utilization, we have built a black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) breeding facility using repurposed materials. Located behind the DBEA building at the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education (CICESE), this facility provides an eco-friendly solution for organic waste management

But... why Hermetia illucens?

Hermetia illucens is a dipteran species known for its ability to efficiently biodegrade organic matter. Its larvae can process large amounts of waste, transforming it into a nutrient-rich material that can be used as compost or animal feed. Additionally, its short life cycle and high biomass conversion efficiency make it a sustainable alternative for waste management.

In March 2024, with the support of students, I began constructing a black soldier fly breeding facility in an area behind the Experimental and Applied Biology Division building at CICESE. This space was previously designated for compost production using organic waste generated in the building.

Between March and December, my students and I cleaned the area and built a small structure for the breeding facility, using only recycled materials.

Although it still requires time to reach its full potential, it is already a great example of how we can sustainably harness the potential of this fly.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the students who have contributed to and continue supporting this project.

A special acknowledgment goes to Jorge Leobara, Ángel García, and Andrés Benítez, who, despite their background in biology, took on the challenge of construction work with great commitment and dedication.
